With Love to Those Who Find Mother’s Day Hard

Mother’s Day is often seen as a happy and joyful occasion for everyone. On the surface, it is a simple celebration of motherhood, a day to honour the women who have shaped our lives. It is meant to be a day of love and gratitude, but for many of us it is anything but simple.

Motherhood is not a one size fits all journey. It is layered, emotional and deeply personal. The path to becoming a mother, the experience of being a mother and the relationships we have with our own mothers do not fit neatly into a greeting card.

So this is for you.

To the first time mum holding her newborn and feeling both overwhelming love and fear.

To the mum balancing work, home and everything in between, feeling overwhelmed and unseen.

To the mum of teenagers, preparing herself for whatever moods the day may bring.

To the empty nester whose children have flown the nest and whose home feels suddenly quiet.

To the woman who is hoping and waiting for a child, marking time and finding each period painful as another reminder that a baby has not yet arrived.

To those enduring the exhausting rollercoaster of fertility treatments, navigating injections, blood tests and ultrasounds. I see you.

To the mum who has experienced loss and hesitates each time she is asked, “How many children do you have?”

To the birth mum who made an impossible choice out of love and thinks of that child every single day.

To the mum who has not given birth but whose love is boundless and unwavering.

To the childfree woman living her truth despite invasive and unwelcome questions.

To the woman who has had an abortion and honours her right to choose.

To the adult carrying the weight of a strained or estranged relationship with their mother.

To the person facing their first, fifth or tenth Mother’s Day without their mum, longing for one more hug, one more conversation, one more moment.

I see you all. The team and I at Tanya Bardo truly acknowledge your experiences. Mums are a big focus here at Tanya Bardo. Many people buy our pieces for their mum or for their daughter and we love being part of those meaningful connections. It means so much to us.

Whatever this day brings, I hope you find space to honour your own journey. You are not alone. You are seen. And you are enough.

Happy Mother’s Day, in whatever way you need it to be.

So much love to you all,
Tanya xoxo
